Why Is Korean Age So Complicated?

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Why Do Koreans Ask Your Age First?

Age plays a big role in Korean culture. Influenced by Confucian traditions, respect is often shown based on age. That’s why people ask your age right away — it helps them choose the proper titles and speech level (formal or informal).

๐Ÿ”ข What Are Korean Age Types?

Koreans have traditionally used 3 different age systems: Korean age (์„ธ๋Š” ๋‚˜์ด), international age (๋งŒ ๋‚˜์ด), and year age (์—ฐ ๋‚˜์ด). It can get confusing for foreigners!

  • Korean Age (์„ธ๋Š” ๋‚˜์ด): Starts at 1 at birth. Everyone gains a year on January 1st.
  • International Age (๋งŒ ๋‚˜์ด): Starts at 0 at birth, gains a year on your birthday. Since June 28, 2023, this is the legal standard in Korea.
  • Year Age (์—ฐ ๋‚˜์ด): Calculated by subtracting birth year from current year. Used in military service and youth protection laws.

๐Ÿ—“️ What Is "Fast Born" (๋น ๋ฅธ ๋…„์ƒ)?

Before 2009, children born between January and February could start school a year early. These early-born students were called "fast-born" and were grouped with students born the previous year. Although the system no longer exists, the term is still used in conversations.

๐Ÿ‰ What Does "Zodiac Age Mate" (๋ ๋™๊ฐ‘) Mean?

Korea follows a 12-year zodiac cycle. People who share the same zodiac sign (every 12 years) are called "๋ ๋™๊ฐ‘". However, this doesn’t imply age equality — respect should still be shown if there’s a big age gap!

๐Ÿ“… Age Unification Law

Since June 28, 2023, Korea has officially adopted international age (๋งŒ ๋‚˜์ด) for all legal, administrative purposes. This change helps simplify documents, contracts, and everyday life — especially for foreigners.

✅ Summary Table

Age Type Description Usage
Korean Age Start at 1, add 1 every January 1 Traditional & informal use
International Age Start at 0, add 1 on birthday Official use since June 28, 2023
Year Age Current year - birth year Used in legal exceptions (e.g. military)

๐Ÿ’ก Final Thought

Understanding Korea’s unique age culture can help you better connect with locals. Thanks to the recent law changes, navigating age in Korea is becoming easier than ever!
